1.
I saw no passage between the fields. What I thought was behind me had become the side of a mountain. What have I stolen that I can keep, that will not change on me. I’m moving fast, but I’m broken down. And I’m going somewhere now. Your eyes are blue now. Your voice is young. And I am only a man. Broken glass, an empty room, my carefull steps are not worth taking. And I’m tired. Of moving fast, cause I’m broken down.
2.
When the blinking lights become too much for you, lie down. Well, you did. You found a place. A hidden place beneath a window, to hear a radio inside playing low. I tried to speak, and the words would not come out, calm down. Well, I did. I found a place. A hidden place beneath a window, to hear a radio inside playing low.

Cypress Tree 04:26
She rode into town on a horse too high, she had her head cocked back and her guns to the sky, and she looked just like silhouette, with the sun behind her neck. The sky was so bright that I could hardly see that she was looking right at me. And she said “Boy, I think you and I are gonna get along.” And I don’t know what she meant. Hell, I guess she’s heaven sent. I saw her on the street just the other day no shoes on her feet, and a smile on her face. and she looked just like a cypress tree, with her scraped up knees. She was singin’ from on high at the top of her lungs and I recognized all of the songs that she sung, for they were the songs that my mother would sing when I was still young. And I don’t know what that means, but no more beauty have I seen. If I could say just one thing to her, what would it be? If I could stare into a crystal ball, what would I see? She’s like a ghost that keeps haunting me. She is a beautiful mystery.

Surrender 03:50
You build these castles in your mind, but you will never see them stand. You will always raise your hands, and surrender. You pull it off better than most, you put those pennies on the track, but you won’t get that money back. That you must surrender. You were always the one to talk big, and then when it came to blows, you hid in your car, you hid in your car. You couldn’t take it that far. You walk these same streets everyday always hoping something new would catch your eye, and change your tune, and to that, you would surrender. You were always the one to talk big, and then when it came to blows, you hid in your car, you hid in your car. You couldn’t take it that far. They were calling, they were calling you out. And you were standing, you were standing your ground. Oh, for a while. Oh, for a while. You build these castles in your mind, but you will never see them stand. You will always raise your hands.

Theater Fire 03:19
I was a singer before the fire, before these walls came down crashing. I was a tenor in the choir, and around us all, the flames kept licking. and she was trembling as I held her hand, but we kept singing. She kept a pen by her bed, she would wake up and write down the dreams that she’d had. No one knew her as well as she knew herself. She kept a knife by her bed in case someone broke in, she could protect herself, but even she couldn’t dream up a death like this. She was a singer before the fire, before these walls came down crashing. She was an alto in the choir, and around us all, the flames kept licking. and she was trembling as I held her hand, but we kept singing.
7.
Leaning back in your chair, there’s a danger of falling, but everything feels right, everything feels right. The water in your glass is all that you needed, And everything feels right, everything feels right. All the things that have let you down are now floating away on the breeze. A long day’s work, beautifully exhausted. Everything feels right, everything feels right. And all the things that have weighed you down are now floating away on the breeze.

Day Is Done 01:11
I’ve seen the shadows hide from the sun, and I’ve seen the window shades go down when the day is done. Don’t talk precious of me, my love, this is not what you think it is.

Marginalia 01:02
10.
I went to your house, and you weren’t home. I knocked on your door, and you weren’t home. I looked in your window, and you weren’t home. So I climbed in that window, and it felt like home. I went in every room. I sat in every chair. I put on your favorite record, and then I laid on the bed. It wasn’t in me to steal nothin’, I wasn’t there to cause a scene. it wasn’t in me to trash the place, I wasn’t there to be mean. I don’t know why I did it. I don’t know why it happened. I suppose, like a dog sleeps on a pile of dirty clothes, I just wanted to be where you’d been.

One Thing 04:16
There’s one thing that I would do if I could do just one thing, I’d take you to the tallest mountains, and to the bottom of the sea, I’d say “this depth and this height is but inches compared to the love I have for you.” What would you do? The love I have for you. There’s a lot of things I want to do, and one of these days I’m gonna see something through. There’s one ring that I would make if I could make just one ring, I’d fashion it out of a yellow feather and a mandolin string, because diamonds and gold are too common, I’m told, but the love that I have for you, that’s not common at all. The love I have for you. There’s a lot of things I want to do, and one of these days I’m gonna see something through. This is the song that I would sing if I could sing just one song, and if my voice were not so fickle, I’d sing it all day long for you.
